Construction underway for Macquarie University Clinical Education Building

Construction starts for Macquarie University Clinical Education Building

The columns for the Macquarie University Clinical Education Building are swiftly being realised.

Due for completion in early 2020 and following the success of the Macquarie University Incubator, the Macquarie University Clinical Education Building is another mass timber building for Macquarie University.

Glulam columns and beams are paired together in a 2.4 by a 16-meter grid which splays at either end. The mass timber is European spruce, all the way from the Binderholz factory in Austria, where it has been pre-cut from a fabrication BIM model including services penetrations and connections for steel bracketry. The timber members are packed into shipping containers and brought to the site, where they are quickly assembled.

The stop-motion shows the first columns being craned into position over a steel baseplate and braced with temporary structural supports until the connecting beams are installed. This process took approximately 15-20 minutes for the initial columns, increasing in speed with momentum. The timber beams are due to arrive on site this week.

Designed to be swiftly realised, the building utilises cutting-edge digital prefabricated construction methods enabled by the multi-level timber engineered structure. The building is intended to establish an academic health precinct, promoting collaborative engagement between education, training, research and clinical practice.
