Lorne Street 'Shared Space' Opened

11 Nov 11

One of three ‘shared space' projects recently completed within Auckland's CBD, Lorne Street provides a new address for Auckland's Central Library and contributes to the network of open spaces and streets within the city's Cultural Precinct.

Previously an underutilised back street, shared space principles - developed collaboratively with Auckland Council and Boffa Miskell - have created a pedestrian-prioritised street and event space between the adjacent AUT campus, New Gallery, St James Theatre and Central Library. Removal of an existing raised terrace and balustrade connects the street, new stairs and library entry in a unifying and continuous urban surface.

The stairs, constructed of stacked solid stone blocks, are articulated to provide a variety of seating and circulation opportunities. A site-specific poem on the stair risers reveals the site's historical significance and bronze text seats translate the Māori word for language - ‘Reo'. A series of light boxes will extend the library into the street showcasing its collection of art and photographs as well as curated art installations.
