The Gold Coast Light Rail Depot & Maintenance Facility is an example of an efficient industrial building of proven construction method and materials, robust, and fit for purpose. The building planning and detailing has been handled with care and thoughtful consideration.

The building design has evolved into an elegant horizontal building with a minimal form at rest in the landscape. The facility has been designed as unpretentious and low key with the intent of achieving minimal visual impact.

The internal planning is driven by the primary functional spaces of the maintenance hall and control centre. The maintenance hall is naturally ventilated and illuminated via integral roof skylights. The offices and meeting rooms are arranged in a rational L shaped plan, for maximum connectivity and to allow for future building expansion. The internal planning includes an emphasis on connectivity between the maintenance halls and the office spaces, and clear line-of-sight from control room to stabling yard.

The general arrangement has undergone rigorous analysis of operational and maintenance process and spatial requirements, while recognising the need for a facility which performs efficiently, provides a high standard of working environment, and acts as a discrete showcase where visitors can view the service in operation.

The Gold Coast Light Rail Depot & Maintenance Facility is designed to achieve a 4 Star Green Star Industrial v1 rating from the Green Building Council of Australia.  Through optimising the project scale, the stabling and maintenance facilities provide significant surface areas for harvesting solar energy and collecting rain water. Rain water harvesting is key to the sustainable provision of water for maintenance services.
