Byron Bay House

Byron Bay House

This house began life as a compromise; he wanted a rural retreat; she wanted a beach shack with ocean views. Perched on a ridgeline amid rolling pastures, with views across Byron Bay to Julian Rocks and Cape Byron, the house dramatically unites the two. The brief for this house centres on landscape and occupation. The client wanted to make the most of the spectacular site and its views; but acknowledged the need for some quieter, less expansive spaces.

Generous verandahs and decks are accessible from each of the spaces on this level and invite occupation that might vary depending on the time of day, or the time of year. They are not a continuous verandah but each a distinct ‘destination’ taking on uses associated with the adjacent internal uses; a breakfast deck, a reading deck, an outdoor living room complete with fire place. Material selection, with particular note to constructability, was used to manage cost and reflect the brief of a relaxed holiday house with a refined (but not opulent) level of finish.
