Avenue House

Avenue House

Located in an inner city character precinct, on a small, steeply sloping site, this project re-organises a heavily modified pre-1946 cottage into a comfortable family home.

The brief required a living environment for a family of five, maximising the rear south-eastern view, and better connection to the garden and pool. Rooms had to accommodate their artworks and cherished antique furniture as well as providing storage for paintings and wine.

To accommodate client needs a contemporary, modestly scaled two storey addition was carefully located in the backyard. The existing central hallway provided the springing point for a subtle transitioning bridge and stair connecting old with new re-configured internal spaces at ground and first floor levels, and with external gardens, pond and pool. The courtyard at ground level retains the qualities and proportions of the existing house. It also organises, frames and reveals both expansive city views and near glimpses to borrowed backyard scenes.

Adjacent to the courtyard, and directly under the sitting room is the garden room, location for barbecues in summer and fireside gatherings in winter, all with contemplative views of the garden and pool.
