1 Parramatta Square

1 Parramatta Square

The design of 1 Parramatta Square (1PSQ) draws together urban design, architecture and landscape architecture to create a place that significantly contributes to the revitalisation of Parramatta Square and regeneration of the broader Parramatta CBD.

Originally intended as an A-Grade 15 storey office building, 1PSQ was transformed into an education campus for Western Sydney University through a rigorous process that tested the flexibility and resilience of the initial commercial base building design.

Located at the north eastern corner of the new Parramatta Civic Precinct, at the corner of Macquarie and Smith Streets, the design gives careful consideration to the treatment of the ground plane and the public spaces created around and under the building, while the stepped down form protects the heritage listed Lancer Barracks site to the south east. Retail frontages, with a two storey colonnade space, activate Smith Street while to the west a new laneway is visually activated by passenger lifts servicing the building within a glass core. A small cafe tenancy provides retail presence on the north-south pedestrian link. Light is drawn into the centre of the building through a triangular atrium space which in turn creates a sense of community and a focus for communication and interaction.

1PSQ has received a 5 Star Green Star Education Design v1 rating.
