‘Islands’ South Beach
Drawing on the site's industrial heritage and the spectacular setting, ‘Islands' at South Beach in Western Australia will be a landmark of design excellence and environmental sustainability.
An uncomplicated structure and form belies a sophisticated architectural solution. Merging Mediterranean charm with modern Australian living, our proposal comprises 99 luxury residences, club facilities and discrete part basement parking.
Completed in late 2009, the project exemplifies innovative residential design, balancing opulence with a concern for ecology, and will be the flagship Stockland development in Australasia.
Three key strategies inform the design concept:
The Staggered Edge
Four, five-storey plus mezzanine apartment buildings face west and towards the Indian Ocean. The staggered alignment of these buildings creates northern aspects and four entrance forecourts with individual character to the east, and four unique beach courtyards to the west. The gradual setback from the beach also provides unimpeded views of Fremantle Marina to the north west and shelters communal areas from the Fremantle Doctor.
One Beach, Four Lifestyles
The distinct entrance courtyards and beach forecourts represent a sequence of four coastal ‘habitats' accessible to all of Island's residents. The northernmost building engages with the neighbouring park via a vibrant commercial strip. The lively courtyard of this building contains swimming pools, sun decks and poolside club facilities. The southernmost building relates to the nearby dune habitat with a deep entrance courtyard and a more subdued forecourt of plunge pools. The outdoor spaces of the two intermediate buildings provide a transition between the environments of urban park and natural reserve.
With spacious loggias, flexible living arrangements and commanding views, the uppermost apartments comprise single or double storey penthouses.
At ground level alongside the apartment buildings, single and double storey beach houses feature private access from the street and car park, and direct access to the beach. Every apartment and beach house features contemporary room arrangements, finely calibrated environmental controls and stunning ocean views.
All 25 apartments that makeup the first phase of the development were sold within hours of the official launch.
