Intergenerational Harbord Diggers wins award

Harbord Diggers Club Redevelopment wins award

The intergenerational community hub, Harbord Diggers Club Redevelopment, has won the 2018 The Urban Developer, Mixed-Use Development of the Year Award.

1 Parramatta Square was also shortlisted in the Mixed-Use category, and Bella Vista Gardens and Cranbrook Residences was shortlisted in the Retirement, Aged Care and Seniors Living Category.

A design consortium comprising Architectus, CHROFI and JMD design transformed the 80-year old Harbord Diggers Club into a pioneering intergenerational community hub combining a new hospitality precinct with club, health and fitness, community facilities, childcare centre and retirement village.

The project commenced in 2012, with Architectus preparing a master plan to guide the future of the club followed by a thorough community consultation process alongside Urbis.

“Working with the local community and club members helped engender trust in the project and assured the community that the club would deliver a project of design excellence”, explained Michael Harrison, Strategic Advisor at Architectus.

Architectus, CHROFI and JMD design were then appointed to design the redevelopment of the club following a design competition in 2014 held by Mounties Group.

“Tai Ropiha, Partner at CHROFI explains, “the design conceals much of the program within the contour of the land with the retirement village organised around a courtyard above the hospitality precinct and club below.

The headland landscape extends across the courtyard to amplify the scenic quality of the precinct while a pair of sandstone buildings rise above as sculptural counterpoints with flowing forms to frame coastal views from the apartments.

A civic scaled veranda merged into the contour of the headland with juxtaposed vertical stone counterpoints above combine to create a powerful composition, this is the New Harbord Diggers.”

“The outcome is a diverse set of facilities nestled gently into one of Sydney’s most iconic coastal headlands, cleverly arranged to celebrate and highlight, yet respect the natural environment and surrounding residents”, said Jennifer Husman, Senior Associate at Architectus.

Doors were opened on Stage 1 of the $200million redevelopment of the iconic club in July 2018, with the second stage due to be completed mid-2019, which will include a function centre, aquatic and fitness centre and one additional retirement living building.

The club interiors were designed by Fender Katsalidis in association with Paul Kelly Design.
